On December 7th, the AEA Ski and Board Club gathered for one of its most beloved traditions: the Pray for Snow Party and Chili Cook-Off. Hosted at Chuck and Monica's beautiful home in Hermosa Beach, this year’s event was a heartwarming kickoff to the winter season, filled with camaraderie, delicious food, and, of course, a shared hope for snowy slopes ahead.
A Feast of Flavors
The chili competition was the centerpiece of the evening, showcasing eight unique recipes crafted with creativity and care. Each dish brought something special to the table, reflecting the individuality and talent of the chefs. Here are the entries that delighted our taste buds:
- John Nolan & Peggy McGee: Rocket Science Chili
- Doug & Teeda Martoccia: JAPOW Chill Chili
- James & Angelika Cullers: Espresso Chili
- Leon & Janelle Oltman: Farm to Table Chili
- Debbie & Mark Williams: Kickin’ Chickin’
- Vel Randic: Tasty Tonawanda II
- Brian & Laura Koester: Double Trouble Meat Party Chili
- Chuck & Monica: Mary’s Bison Had a Little Lamb Chili
- Bulldog Chili: An entry without a signature, but still a tasty contribution!
Various cornbreads and sides accompanied the chilis, rounding out the delicious spread and ensuring there was something for everyone to enjoy.
The Voting Process
Each guest received four tickets to vote for their favorite chili recipes, making the competition as interactive as it was delicious. As people sampled the diverse flavors—from smoky and spicy to sweet and savory—the conversations and debates over "the best chili" added to the lively atmosphere.
And the Winners Are...
While every chili earned praise, the voting crowned a few standout favorites:
- Brian & Laura Koester with their Double Trouble Meat Party Chili took home the top honor.
- Leon & Janelle Oltman's Farm to Table Chili claimed second place.
- James & Angelika Cullers with their Espresso Chili tied with Doug & Teeda Martoccia’s JAPOW Chill Chili for third place.
Though these winners earned bragging rights, everyone agreed: every chili brought something unique and memorable. In this competition, the real winner was the community.
A Warm Community Spirit
The Pray for Snow Party is about more than chili—it’s about fostering the vibrant community that makes the AEA Ski and Board Club so unique. It’s a time to reconnect with friends, share the excitement of the upcoming season, and revel in the joy of good company.
Looking Ahead
With the snow prayers officially sent skyward and our spirits lifted by this fantastic gathering, we’re ready to hit the slopes! Thank you to everyone who attended, participated, and made this event successful. Special thanks to Chuck and Monica for hosting and to all the talented cooks who brought their A-game to the chili competition.
Here’s to a snowy and adventure-filled season ahead! See you on the slopes!
